Infinitude by Julia Preminger
Artist’s Statement: This photograph was taken in September 2015 at Muriwai Beach, New Zealand on the west coast of the north island. So we are looking west over the Tasman Sea. The surf is very complex and powerful there. I lived in the Auckland area of New Zealand for five years. September is late winter in New Zealand but in the coastal areas of the north island, winter is relatively gentle and people go to the beaches throughout the year to enjoy the sea.
The sea is luminous, abstract, vast, and in constant motion. The roar of the waves is deafening. Gazing out at it, my heart expands out to infinity as I try to absorb the immensity before me. The challenge is to make a still image that conveys some of that majesty. I feel like a beginner.
I took multiple images of the surf on this afternoon and finally chose this one which conveys some of the luminosity of the sea as well as waves in various phases of expression.

Biography
Julia Preminger was raised in Mohegan Lake, NY, completed her BA at SUNY Stony Brook in Art, and her MA in Art at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, and now lives and works in Livingston Manor, NY. She drew detailed botanicals and still lives in graphite or pastels and exhibited her work in the midwest during the 1990s. Around 2000 she revived a lifelong interest in nature photography and has been working in that medium every since.
